What is in the Name?

Once again the demand of a separate state has created ruckus, once again critics and supporters spar over the issue. Once again we are going to be divided!

We witnessed a massive hullabaloo over the issue related to "Unity and Diversity". And another state in on the cards. A number of debates, discussions have been devoted to this issue. Ironically, the question still prevails. Are we really united? If you ask me my point of view, I will certainly come up with a big ‘NO’. During the freedom struggle there were only Indians. Now India is divided into too many states. There are Biharis, there are Marathis, Kashmiri, Bengali, Keralites and the list goes on. Now in India every body is known by their states. There is no Indian.

Today Andhra Pradesh people are demanding a separate state "Telangana", and as central government gave in for their demand the various regions of "United India" are reverberating with the uproar demanding separate states- Gorkhaland from West Bengal, Bundelkhand and Western UP from Uttar Pradesh.

This development reminds me of the division of India into two pieces, later on into three. Who is happy by this division game? Both countries suffered and are suffering till now. Back then, there was demand of two countries now there is demand of two states. At that time, India got divided on the name of religion now we are dividing India on the name of Region.

In past there has been division of Bihar and Jharkhand got formed likewise Uttaranchal and Uttarakhand were formed which I witnessed. Is there any tangible benefits of this division? Only the name changed. I don't know if there are any invisible benefits.

There is desperate need for a change in mentality of the people. Division is not the solution. In past there was demand of Country division now there is demand of state division. In future may be there will be demand of city division.

The writing on the wall is clear; ‘United India’ is soon going to be ‘divided India’ either we need to wake up for the cause or face the music. By changing only the names of the state nothing will be changed. What is in the Name after all?

Its actually about people wanting their share in power and the benefits flowing from it.
Remember Madhu Koda, he is the one who made the maximum gains through Bihar's bifurcation... And we thought creation of small states is aimed at ensuring better governance.
Well, I am joining Ajit Singh in demanding Harit Pradesh, may be I get my share of benefits once it is created. Anybody inetersted?

In the end, we the ordinary people suffer as we will be the ones paying "higher" taxes to carry the burden of a new state. And the money shall go into the coffers of these so called netas. Its all so depressing.

I'm amazed by your thoughts. Who says that we are going to be divided ???
It's not at all an issue of the 'Unity and Diversity'. Infact India is all about "Unity IN Diversity" and the current movement suggests that how diverse we are. The National Anthem also gives a clear cut idea with lines like "Punjab,Sindh,Gujrat Maratha, Dravid,Utkal,Banga......". Yet we are Indians. No Bihari, Marathi or Keralite ever claims not to be Indian. We should never have any doubt over their Indianness or Nationalism.
Some times back three new states were carved out and they are flourishing as they did not go out of United India. Such divisions are not a disintegration but a mirror of our diversification.
It's all about aspiration of people of a region for the better development. Neglected by the governments for more than 60 years, if now they themselves feel to change the fate and face of their region, what's bad about that? Above all it's also their right given by constitution and they are not demanding anything illegal. It's for union government to look closely into the matter and ensure that their demands are really justified and they take a way of development (and not destruction in soma cases). People should also take the path of non-voilence while putting their demands.

well nehal saab show me where is unity in diversity. we are divided by region. today marathi does not want to live with bihari and upites and same case with assamese and in south india there is clear cut discrimination with north indian so in north india. if it is diversity then where is unity?
show me a single example in which by division the states grows and flourished. indeed constitution gives us right for better living. But better living can not be achieved by Division.

Division of states is quite necessary. it is always tough to rule over a larger geographical area... controlling huge population makes the task even more tougher. Dividing states is not something like dividing a country... The demand of Telangana is older than the demand of Jharkhand or chhattisgarh... so why is there so much fuss? Besides both Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand are doing better after their formation. even those who live in Jharkhand claim that they are getting better opportunities after separation. No body is asked to pay higher taxes and thanks to our Judiciary that Madhu Koda is getting heart attacks. so keep faith. As far as regionalism is concerned... it is also quite necessary up to an extent. Whenever I hear the sound of Jai Maharashtra, something pinches inside me and makes me look forward to a day when we will be able to say Jai Bihar!

for Meraj on unity...
I am a Bihari by lineage and birth, i have spent nearly half of my life in UP, one of my sister lives in Maharashtra (Aurangabad), the other one lives in Rajasthan (jaipur) and one other sister is in Jharkhand, my brother works in Gujrat... and last but not the least ... they are all Muslims living in homes of strictly vegetarian Hindus. This is called unity in diversity. Don't get confused by things propagated by media... Secularism exists... unity exists.

I totally agree with Meraj. We, the common people, are the sufferers in the end, whether we believe it or not. Just saying that their is unity & secularism is like living in a mirage.
Face the truth dude! Dont believe the media, but at least keep ur eyes open and believe wat u see. ;-)

Dear all,

It's good that, we agree to disagree as everyone has his/her own point of view.
Rightly said by someone that "it is always tough to rule over a larger geographical area... controlling huge population makes the task even more tougher. Dividing states is not something like dividing a country... "
And also equally right is saying "We, the common people, are the sufferers in the end,.."

It's ultimately the sufferings of the people for a long period of time that has led them to try this way using their constitutional right. It's quiet possible that many politicians will take the advantage of the situation (and that is always the case, no matter you have a big state or small state). Always hope for better and work in right direction.

It's never like that all Marathis or Assamese do not want the Upiite or Biharis. They are just a bunch of people with either support of regional seasoned politician or movement with antinational sentiments always create problem. There are black ships in every community. Otherwise we are all Indian (even if some one wishes to raise slogans like Jai Maratha,Jai Bihar or Jai Tilangana).
